I checked the ice approx. 1/2 a mile east of Smith's Point in the center and still found 4" of black ice.  I drilled a few holes 100' from shore and found 6" of ice.  This area of 4" ice seems to be about 1/2 a mile long.  Taken Feb.1/17
This is near the center of Five Mile Bay off the eastern end of Malaren Is.  where I found 7" of ice.  Taken Feb.1/17
This is near the center of Five Mile Bay between the Dunroe portage and Dunroe Island where I found 6" of ice.  Taken Feb.1/17

There two pictures are take in the harbour about 500' out from Sloop Is. where I found 5" of mostly white ice.  Taken Feb.1/17

    1. Black ice is formed when the lake water freezes. White ice forms when snow lands on the black ice and sinks it allowing water to seep through turning the snow into slush and freezing. The snow contains a lot of air which gives it the white colour. Black is probably 2 to 3 times stronger than white ice. Typically most ice is about 3/4 white and 1/4 black.
